NETZSCH instruments for thermogravimetry have a compact design and are equipped with high-resolution balance systems. The top-loading sample arrangement allows for easy operation and measurement of the temperature directly at the sample.
Almost all NETZSCH thermobalances are vacuum-tight and allow for measurement of mass changes under defined atmospheres. The optional c-DTA® signal additionally yields information on exothermal and endothermal processes in the sample, even if they are not related to a mass change.
Heated coupling adapters for gas analysis systems such as QMS, FTIR or GC-MS can be added on to many thermobalances. The thermogravimetric analyzers of the 400 series can be equipped with DSC and/or DTA sample carriers at any time in order to form full-fledged TGA-DSC or TGA-DTA instruments (STA).

Application areas:

 

  • For a thermobalance it is always a challenge to test carbon black-filled or oxidation-sensitive polymer compounds correctly regarding quantity. This is no problem with the new TG 209 F3 Tarsus

  • The plot shows a polyethylene filled with 1.8 % carbon black. After switching over from inert gas atmosphere (nitrogen) to oxidizing atmosphere (synthetic air) at 850°C the added carbon black burns to carbon dioxide. There is no residue

  • With the help of the c-DTA® calculated DTA signal, endothermal and exothermal effects can be identified. In the following graph, the 2-step decomposition of a polyamide (PA) sample in a nitrogen atmosphere is presented. The melting peak, determined by c-DTA® to be at 226°C, identifies the sample as PA6

  • It should be kept in mind when processing this material that the first mass loss step occurs already during melting; this is apparently the release of processing additives
